Ashleigh

Ashleigh came into the clinic with her supportive boyfriend. They were both excited to parent together. When Ashleigh returned a couple weeks later for her ultrasound the story had changed. Her boyfriend had broken up with her and she was suddenly alone and her mother was threatening to kick her out of the house if she decided to have this baby. Ashleigh was now considering abortion.

After her appointment, she visited an abortion clinic and paid for the procedure two separate times, and walked out of both appointments. Obviously struggling with her decision, she scheduled another appointment with our client advocate to talk about resources and options.

They decided to invite the father of the baby back for another ultrasound. After seeing their child on the monitor they met with the client advocate again. She counseled them on their relationship and the pregnancy.

Her boyfriend is being supportive and they both expressed they were looking for a future together. They have committed to premarital counseling. Ashleigh has future plans to finish college and her boyfriend is looking at finding a career to support Ashleigh and the baby. Ashleigh called last week, excited to announce to the client advocate and nurse she worked with that she was having a boy.

Lakisha

Lakisha is a mother of 3 and found herself pregnant by her husband she was in the process of divorcing. She was scared and unsure how she would raise another child. She had originally called our clinic, as well as others in the area, looking for an abortion. She decided against terminating her pregnancy and while in the WIC office overheard other women talking about our education program and how she could earn credit to buy baby care items by attending classes. Lakisha came to our class and began earning her baby bucks and felt a sense of hope.

Lakisha was encouraged to come back and began bringing her mother. Her mom says she became a mother to Lakisha at 14 and did not have access to this resource, but would have really benefited from it. She says she is learning a lot of things she didn't know herself and feels better prepared to help Lakisha with this baby. Lakisha is contemplating bringing her 13 year old to class to learn as well. She is so incredibly grateful for the assistance and opportunity to thrive.
